Hawaii

  • Hawaii is the Pacific United States. Its territory is formed by a Polynesian archipelago of the same name, located in the North Pacific Ocean and composed of eight main islands. Formerly it was known as the Sandwich Islands. Hawaii is the only US state that is not in the Americas.
  • During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, a wave of immigrants from Tahiti bent and absorbed the original inhabitants of Hawaii. The first settlers known in the Hawaiian Islands were Polynesian travelers. The islands were first visited by Europeans in 1778, more specifically by the English Captain James Cook, who named them "the Sandwich Islands" by the English Count of Sandwich.
  • Constantly threatened by European nations eager to add Hawaii to their empires, sugar planters and American businessmen began seeking annexation by the United States. A reciprocity treaty was negotiated in 1875. The treaty was renewed in 1884 but was not ratified. Ratification came in 1887 when an amendment was added giving the United States the exclusive right to establish a naval base at Pearl Harbor. The amount of sugar exported to the United States grew a lot, so American entrepreneurs invested in the Sugar industry.
  • An attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December of 1941 by Japan was a trigger for America's entry into the Second World War. Hawaii served as an important base of operations in the Pacific and helped America win the Pacific War. The citizens of Hawaii voted to become a state in 1958.
  • Hawaii, which had enjoyed economic and demographic growth since the end of World War II, suffered damage in the 1990s. Hawaii's tourism economy was hit by the tragic events of September 11, 2001, but today it has fully recovered.
